The issue of whether abortion should be legalized has taken over the public sphere in South America, with the pregnancies of adolescent rape victims fuelling the debate. In Bolivia, for example, four ministers of the Evo Morales government have come out publicly in favor of decriminalizing abortion in response to a public and private initiative that seeks to change the Bolivian legislation in favor of abortion.
In order to direct the debate, Hivos in South America is organizing the screening of the documentary “Micaela”, that tells the story of the fight to legalize abortion in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.
The making of the documentary was also funded by Hivos South America and had the support of many of Hivos’ local partners and allied organizations. In Peru: Promsex, Demus and Cladem; in Ecuador: Fundación Desafío, Luna Creciente, Coordinadora Juvenil, Radialistas Apasionados y Apasionadas and Sendas; in Bolivia: Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir-Bolivia, Colectivo Rebeldía and Cidem.
“Micaela” was released in Quito, Ecuador in July and will be shown in Lima, Peru, on August 16th; and in La Paz, Bolivia, on August 8th.
Hivos believes in a world where everyone has equal access to the full range of reproductive healthcare services, including access to safe and legal abortions and affordable and reliable forms of contraception.
