Plaza Pública, an online non-profit digital newspaper and Hivos partner, celebrated its second anniversary on February 22nd with a round table of prominent journalists entitled ‘La soleada caverna’ ( The Sunny Cavern). The website, supported by the private University Rafael Landívar, has become a news model in the eyes of Guatemalan citizens.
Following a speech by Plaza Pública director Martín Rodríguez Pellecer, the celebration featured a round table with three internationally-renowned journalists: Carlos Dada, the founder of the news magazine El Faro in El Salvador, Carlos Fernando Chamorro, the founder and director of Confidencial Digital in Nicaragua, and Leonardo Arce, a Spanish independent reporter who is working in Honduras. They analyzed the challenges and risks faced by alternative media in Central America, one of the most dangerous regions for journalists.
The Plaza Pública project began in 2011 as an on-campus newsroom with access to university resources. In 2012, the website received some 149, 447 unique visitors.
In its two years of existence, Plaza Pública has covered controversial issues such as political corruption, links between business and politics, human rights, and agrarian issues, amongst other topics. In 2011, the newspaper became a finalist in one of the most important awards given to investigative journalism thanks to its feature, ‘La impunidad de los encapuchados del Panajachel’.
