Hivos at Expo Milano 2015: changing the food system to make healthy food available for all

September 21, 2015

EXPO Milano takes place from May 1 to October 31. The EXPO serves as a platform to exchange and share solutions on the theme of food.  Countries and international organisations showcase their ideas for guaranteeing the supply of healthy, safe food for everyone while respecting the planet’s limits.

From September 3 to 5, IFOAM – Organics International, in collaboration with Nürnberg Messe/BIOFACH and Bologna Fiere, organised the Organic Week at the Biodiversity Park of the EXPO to illustrate the vital importance of biodiversity for the production of our food. Biodiversity is rapidly declining due to monoculture and industrial agriculture (organic farming is only done on 1 percent of all agricultural land).

On the second day, entitled “We feed the planet sustainably or not at all”, experts debated how to make our food sustainable. Together with Tim LaSalle, a leading organic consultant, Hivos’ Senior Advocacy Officer Frank Mechielsen discussed the negative effects of the current industrial food production system and how to come up with alternatives. The Hivos Sustainable Diets programme aims for a change in the food system to make healthy food available for all people. We work with partner organisations in several developing countries to achieve local food system transformations.

Greater consumer awareness of the true social, environmental and economic costs of the current system can be a first step.

To further highlight our Sustainable Diets 4 All agenda, Hivos will be active at other future events.
